For years, anyone who wanted a proper three-row SUV with a strong hybrid drivetrain in India had no real option from a mainstream Korean brand. That changes on September 4, 2026. The Kia Sorento will go on sale in India that day, and it will be the first Kia model in the country to offer a strong-hybrid powertrain. It arrives with a diesel option and AWD as well — a combination no rival in this price segment currently delivers in full.

Positioned above the Seltos as Kia India's flagship ICE model, the Sorento will compete with the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, and Jeep Meridian. Since it is expected to be locally assembled at Kia's Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh — production has already commenced — pricing is anticipated to start at around ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom). Final pricing will be revealed on September 4.

Two powertrains — one is a first for Kia in India

The headline powertrain is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol strong-hybrid system. A 60 PS electric motor works alongside the petrol engine, producing a combined output of 238 PS and 380 Nm, routed through a six-speed automatic gearbox. This is a full parallel hybrid — not a belt-starter unit — which means it can run on electric power alone at low speeds and actively recuperates energy under braking.

The diesel option uses a 2.2-litre turbocharged engine borrowed from the Kia Carnival, producing 202 PS and 440 Nm, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both powertrains will be available with AWD, though Kia has confirmed the powertrain-to-AWD pairing details will be announced at the September 4 launch event.

Size and seating

The Sorento is a large SUV by any measure. It stretches 4,815 mm in length on a 2,815 mm wheelbase, making it noticeably bigger than the Seltos and roughly on par with the Fortuner in footprint. It will be offered in both six-seat (captain's chairs in the second row) and seven-seat configurations. Boot space is 179 litres with all three rows occupied, expanding to 1,996 litres with the rear seats folded.

Design and features

The exterior follows Kia's 'Opposites United' design language — a rectangular Tiger Nose grille, vertically oriented LED headlamps with Y-shaped DRLs, and chrome window-line surrounds that taper toward the rear. The interior features a dashboard wrapped in soft leatherette upholstery with full-width ambient lighting, and captain's seats in the second row.

Confirmed features include dual 12.3-inch screens, Level 2 ADAS, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. Kia has also confirmed a Live Generative AI assistant for the India-spec model — making it the first Sorento globally to offer this technology.

Bookings are open

Official pre-bookings opened on August 3, 2026. Unofficial dealer bookings had begun in July. The September 4 launch date will bring final variant-wise prices, confirmed powertrain specifications for India, and full feature fitment details.

Flaming Piston's Take

The Sorento's powertrain menu — strong hybrid, diesel, and AWD — is the most comprehensive offered by any single model in this price band right now. The Fortuner has diesel and AWD capability but no hybrid. The Kodiaq runs petrol-only in its current India-spec form. The Tayron and Meridian offer competitive packages but narrower powertrain choice. If Kia manages to price the hybrid variant sensibly relative to the ₹35–45 lakh expected range, the combination of a proper strong-hybrid drivetrain, three-row seating, and all-wheel drive in one package could make it difficult to justify some of the alternatives. Everything hinges on the number Kia reveals on September 4.
