2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class India Launch: PHEV-Only, 115 km EV Range, Priced from ₹2.20 Crore

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the 2026 S-Class facelift at ₹2.20 crore (ex-showroom) — and for the first time in India, the S-Class is plug-in hybrid only. The brand's flagship sedan arrives exclusively in S 450e PHEV guise and exclusively in long-wheelbase form, continuing India's tradition of always getting the larger, rear-passenger-focused version of the car. Deliveries are expected to begin around Diwali 2026.
The powertrain is the headline. A 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine pairs with a 163 PS rear-mounted electric motor and a 22 kWh battery to produce 435 bhp and 680 Nm, sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic. Mercedes claims 0–100 kmph in 5.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph. In pure electric mode, the claimed range is 115 km — enough to cover most urban daily commutes without touching the petrol engine at all. The 22 kWh battery charges from 10–80 percent in 20 minutes on a 60 kW DC charger. Combined efficiency is rated at 32.3 km/l (WLTP), which means the on-paper ownership cost case is meaningfully better than the outgoing petrol-only models.
The exterior changes are deliberate rather than dramatic — the S-Class's silhouette is an asset Mercedes doesn't tamper with. The updated front gets a 20 percent larger illuminated grille, new Digital Light LED headlamps with twin-star signatures projecting up to 600 metres, and an illuminated bonnet star that appears on the S-Class for the first time. New 20-inch alloy wheel designs and expanded paint and Manufaktur personalisation options complete the outside.
Inside, the more significant transformation is the technology cabin. The old 12.8-inch single screen has been replaced by a Superscreen setup: a 14.4-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch passenger-side display, and a 12.3-inch digital driver display — all running Mercedes-Benz's latest MB.OS software with fourth-generation MBUX and AI voice assistant integration. Physical controls are largely absent; virtually everything is screen-operated. Rear passengers in the executive seat configuration get chairs that recline to 43.5 degrees with heating, ventilation, massage, and individual smartphone-like controller tablets. The car gains 15 airbags — a first for the nameplate — alongside E-Active Body Control air suspension and rear-wheel steering as standard.

Why It Matters
The S-Class going PHEV-only for India is the clearest signal yet of where Mercedes sees the upper end of the Indian luxury market heading. The price premium over the outgoing model — ₹35 lakh at the base — is substantial, but the buyer for a ₹2.20 crore car is not making that decision on price alone. What the PHEV powertrain does is make the S-Class meaningfully more usable as a daily vehicle for urban buyers who can charge at home: a 115 km electric range erases petrol costs on most Bengaluru or Delhi weekday commutes entirely. The BMW 7 Series remains the direct rival, but the S-Class has always dictated the terms of this conversation — and the PHEV move is consistent with that posture.
